True/False

DIRECTIONS: Read the paragraphs. Indicate whether each sentence is true or false.

In her books, author and city planner Jane Jacobs has been fighting suburban sprawl for more than forty years. What are some of Jacobs' ideas about city planning? First, Jacobs says that people want good neighborhoods. What's a good neighborhood? It's a friendly neighborhood where people feel safe, where kids play, and where everyone feels at home.

How do you create good neighborhoods? First, Jacobs says to get rid of big streets with fast traffic. Fast traffic may be good for cars, but it drives people away. Think of the typical land that surrounds a freeway. It's often empty and ugly. Compare this to a warm, friendly village with small, slow-moving streets.

Jacobs' other big idea is to bring people together instead of pushing them apart. In many suburbs, people work in one place, shop in a second place, eat dinner in third place, and sleep in a fourth. A better idea is to have a little bit of everything in a neighborhood: shops, businesses, parks, and so on. Mixed functions bring people together, and when people come together their neighborhoods feel safe and friendly.

Finally, Jacobs is against "big" projects. Giant skyscrapers, stadiums, malls, and superhighways drive people apart. Instead, Jacobs thinks that city planners should let things develop on their own. People are smart, Jacobs thinks. She trusts them to build what they need.
